El "grooming" físico es el proceso de desensibilizar a los niños mediante niveles cada vez mayores de cercanía. Puede pasar de un simple saludo con la mano, a un abrazo o a compartir una silla. Los depredadores buscan actividades que puedan realizar a solas con los niños, excluyendo a otros adultos. Este tipo de comportamiento da paso de forma natural al "grooming" psicológico, donde los depredadores muestran favoritismo hacia los niños y a menudo elogian su "relación especial" con ellos. Los depredadores recompensarán a los niños con privilegios y regalos sin permiso, y les animarán a mantenerlo en secreto. Traspasan los límites al exponer a los niños a "cosas de adultos", como palabrotas, chistes obscenos o ingerir alcohol. Esto puede progresar hasta hablar de temas sexuales y ver pornografía. Todas estas situaciones hacen que los niños se sientan culpables y cómplices, porque saben que están mal. Esos sentimientos pueden paralizar a los niños e impedir que revelen el abuso.

Community Grooming is the hardest to recognize because the predator seeks to present themselves as the “ideal” person: employee, volunteer, coach, scout leader, or parent for example. In this guise, the predator builds trust and a good reputation, especially with people of authority around children, which ultimately ensures access to children. In this stage the predator advances the grooming process from seemingly innocent touching, accidental touching, increased sexualized touching, to exposing themselves and/or the child. Even if the child comes to feel something is wrong, they think they cannot say anything as this is the “ideal” person. A well-respected adult and that no one would believe them.

Child Abuse Prevention Month: Physical Grooming

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month: Physical Grooming is the process of desensitizing a child through increasing levels of closeness. It could progress from a wave, to a hug, or to sharing a chair. The predator seeks out activities to do alone with the child to the exclusion of other adults. This type of behavior transitions seamlessly into Psychological Grooming. The predator shows the child favoritism and often extolls of their “special relationship.” The predator will reward the child with privileges and gifts without permission and encourage them to keep it a secret. They push boundaries by exposing the child to “adult stuff” like profanity, telling dirty jokes or alcohol. This can progress to talking about sexual topics and viewing pornography. All these things, because the child knows they are wrong, make the child feel guilty and complicit. Those feelings can paralyze a child from disclosing abuse.

This year we are focusing on the beginning stages of potential abuse where we are not alerted to abuse, necessarily, but rather to inappropriate behavior that often precedes abuse or the attempt of abuse. Grooming is the deliberate manipulation tactic predators use to gain trust. There are three types of grooming: Physical, Psychological, and Community. Learning to recognize grooming signs is the best way to prevent abuse from happening. Over the next few weekends in April we will present some defining elements of grooming. If you know of abuse or have a healthy suspicion of abuse, call DCF at 1-800-96ABUSE (1-800-962-2873)

On Good Ground" is the Archdiocese of Miami’s theme for the 2025-2026 academic year. The theme encourages principals, teachers, and students to not only receive and embody God's word but also to actively cultivate it in their own lives and in the schools to help others grow in faith and bear good spiritual fruits. The ADT had an art contest asking adult students to create an image that conveyed for them the message “On Good Ground”, the reception was so wonderful we ended up with 17 winners! This artwork will be posted on a sign outside the activity building in the coming week, this is the banner version of the sign.

Driftwood Art

This piece of driftwood from the Florida shores came to life in art class from our adult student's beautiful imaginations. We brainstormed what each person saw in the wood and brought the vision to life as a group. We concluded that it resembled a mother walking up through a meadow, holding a baby, and collecting flowers in a basket she carried over her head. As we were thinking of a name for our piece we shared our vision with Sister Fausta. Sister was reminded of the Madonna Dei Fiori - Our Lady of Flowers. She shared with us that there is a Sanctuary of the Madonna Dei Fiori located in BRA CUNEO, ITALY just 31 miles south east of Turin.

A Heartfelt Thank You to The Marian Center

On Wednesday, February 12, we had the honor of picking up 20 beautifully crafted HOPE boxes created by the incredible students of The Marian Center School and Services in Miami Gardens.

For over 61 years, The Marian Center, a part of the Archdiocese of Miami, has been dedicated to serving students and adults with diverse abilities, empowering them through education, faith, and community support.

Each year, during Catholic Schools Week, they select a service project that reflects their belief in the power of giving. This year, we were truly grateful that they chose to partner with Joshua’s Heart Foundation to spread hope and kindness through their thoughtful donations.

“The mission of The Marian Center is to educate and empower persons with diverse abilities and nurture them to wholeness, following the Gospel and the Church’s call to Love, Charity, and Justice.”

Archbishop Thomas Wenski Key Messages:

This proposed amendment to our state constitution would prohibit all restrictions on abortion before viability and create a broad exception that any “healthcare provider” could exploit to allow abortion up to birth. I urge all Catholics and people of good will: Vote “no” on Amendment 4!

By insisting that every human being matters, we bring to public policy debates on issues of human dignity, justice and peace, an understanding of the human person that, while founded on the Christian Scriptures, is also accessible to human reason.

This is not to “impose our views” but to “make our proposal” about what is necessary for human flourishing in society. In making our proposal, we hope to persuade our fellow Floridians to vote “no” on Amendment 4!

FL Bishops’ Statement:

Vote "NO" on Amendment 4 • "We urge all Floridians of goodwill to stand against the legalization of late-term abortion and oppose the abortion amendment. In doing so, we will not only protect the weakest, most innocent, and defenseless of human life among us but also countless women throughout the state from the harms of abortion," said the bishops of Florida in their statement on Amendment 4.

You might have heard about Florida Amendment 4, which will appear on Florida’s November 2024 ballot. If you have not, I urge you to be informed about Amendment 4, a misleading and dangerous proposal that would legalize abortion up to full term, prohibiting all restrictions on abortion before viability, eliminate parental consent, and create a broad exception that any “healthcare provider” could exploit to allow abortion up to birth.

As confirmed Catholics we are to witness in an increasingly secularized world that God matters and because God matters, human beings, created in God’s own image and likeness, including the unborn, matter as well.

Sand in Our Shoes - Inspired by the story which made headlines in the Archdiocese newspaper the Voice “They told us if we put sand in our shoes we’d stay here forever” – Sister Lucia. This little beach house of Divine Providence is the second in a series of fairy houses created for our Art-rageous Auction on Italian Night. The little beach house was hand made by the adult students, no detail was spared. Everything from tiny shoes filled with sand to actual photos of the Sisters on the beach, to a sand sculpture of our founder St. Joseph Cottolengo. This little house even includes an “artist’s cove” a little spot for creativity inspired by our beautiful artist Sister Fausta. The dolls were handmade and the photos are actual shots from a beach photo shoot we had a few years ago in photography class.

Culinary Class is kicking off National Hispanic Heritage month with a little lesson on "sofrito! Sofrito is a flavorful Latin American sauce made with aromatic ingredients like onion, garlic, peppers, and herbs for a punch of savory flavor. It's used as a favor base for soups, rice dishes, stews and more. In this lesson we used it as a base for our black beans served over jasmine rice.

Father Curtis Kiddy visits the Marian Center June 23 2022

Father Curtis Kiddy came to Miami to visit some friends, and we were among them. Fr. Kiddy was celebrating Mass for us at the Marian Center for several years, (2010-2017). He left Miami to join the Congregation of the Passionists, Father, Brother, Sisters and lay people who follow the spirituality of St. Paul of the Cross-proclaiming God’s love for the world revealed through the Passion of Jesus Christ. On May 24, 2022, in Jamaica, NY, Fr. Kiddy did his final vows and now is permanently a Passionist Priest. Our Media Team has prepared a gift that Fr. Kiddy enjoyed immensely. He was touched by our welcoming attitude, by our love, and by the numerous times that our adults told him how much we miss him! May our Lord bless Father Kiddy in his ministry! We love you Father Kiddy!

Seven students campaigned for Student Council Office. They created exceptional posters and gave their campaign speeches on Wednesday, February 2nd. Each student did an amazing job and we know that this was because of the guidance and support that they received from their parents/family. You, parents, are commended for the care, time and energy that you spent helping your child be the best candidate that they could be.

Based on the election results, we proudly present the 2022 – 2023 Student Council: President: Octavis Williams; Vice-President: Jacqueline Liu; Secretary: Treasure Smith; Council Members: Tyreek Davis, Meilani Perdomo, Anna Santos and Trevon Williams. We look forward to great things from our Student Council. An Installation Ceremony will be scheduled in the very near future.

Our Faith Day Retreat started with a moment of prayer guided by our students, under the guidance of Mrs. Johnnie Brown, our Educational Consultant and volunteer. The message given: we are the Light of the world because we are very good friend of Jesus, and we bring His light in our world. Fr. Joseph and Fr. Alex concelebrated the Eucharist. Down Syndrome Awareness Month

Clients have been busy creating Down syndrome awareness pins! They've sculpted mini hands holding a heart which are representative of Down Syndrome Awareness, and several other original creations on mini canvas and star shaped wood! They are available for sale for a limited time until October 30th. Prices are in the photos ranging between $3.00 and $5.00 (plus $1.50 shipping). Hand sculptures are made to order, all other artwork is one-of-a-kind and we don't have many left. Mrs. Jacqueline Amich, teacher at the Academy, for twenty years has been taking her students to the Marian Center, or welcoming our students to their school. Marian Center's hand bell choir plays for Pope Francis in Rome, others in Italy

MIAMI GARDENS| The sound of bells tolling is part of the soundtrack of Rome, the eternal city. But from April 2 to 7, 2018, their resonance was altered by the musical input of 13 members of the Marian Center ’s hand bell choir, who toured and performed at various locations, including for Pope Francis at the general audience April 4.

After months of rehearsing and preparing, a dream became a reality as the Marian Center’s students, teachers and chaperones met Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square. The pope greeted and blessed them, and even gave a shout out to Miami. (Look for the videos posted on their Facebook page .)

The group presented the pope with a quilt containing patches with crosses, hearts, flowers, butterflies and more, all made by students of the Marian Center to commemorate the trip. The quilt included a quote by Pope Francis: “Beauty, under the care of artists, has the ability to transform even the everyday lives of men and women. Beauty has the power to heal hearts and souls.”

The hearts and souls of the students certainly were touched as they told Pope Francis “We love you.” And he, in turn, replied, “I love you. Pray for me."

MIAMI GARDENS| At the Marian Center , faculty, parents and volunteers believe they walk among angels.

On Dec. 20, that belief proved true as a host of Marian Center students dressed as angels walked among the audience during the “Making Miracles Happen” Christmas concert.

Not only angels came, but shepherds and sheep, the three kings, a colorguard, musicians and choirs, singing and celebrating Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

The choir from St. Joseph Church in Miami Beach also performed, as well as Ralph Dividio and friends, and award-winning opera tenor Roberto Iarussi.

Every year, the Marian Center, a school and training center for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, hosts a Christmas pageant, but this was the first time they combined the event with a concert. The reason: the center’s hand bell choir has been invited to perform for Pope Francis, in Rome, in April 2018.

The concert helped launch the “Let the Bells Ring” drive, which aims to raise $60,000 for travel expenses, transportation, accommodations, meals and all other necessities for the hand bell choir, staff, and chaperones.

Staff, students celebrate, credit late founder for "sprinkling her magic" from heaven\

MIAMI GARDENS | On what would have been the 97th birthday of Sister Lucia Ceccotti, their founder and guiding light, Marian Center students and staff celebrated by dedicating a new fitness zone/play area at the school.

“Sister Lucia blesses us with her knowledge and wisdom,” said PTA president Toni Acocella. “She continues to sprinkle her magic on the Marian Center. She is in heaven working for us. Let’s all wish Sister Lucia a happy birthday!”

Acocella was joined at the May 5 event by the Marian Center’s parents, board members and archdiocesan officials, including Archbishop Thomas Wenski, who tried out one of the new playground’s four slides after the ribbon-cutting and blessing.

“This is wonderful. It’s good to get in shape, myself included,” he said afterward. “I hope you students will play and exercise and become strong in both body and spirit.”

MIAMI BEACH | A sold-out crowd of benefactors and friends filled Joe's Stone Crab Nov. 6 for a fundraising luncheon benefiting the Marian Center School .

The sixth annual "Claws for Celebration" event raised money to upgrade the school's aging playground and exercise area. Once upgraded, the area will be named Sister Lucia's Sport and Fitness Park, in honor of the Marian Center's founder, Sister Lucia Ceccotti.

Sister Lucia led the first group of Sisters of St. Joseph Benedict Cottolengo who came from Italy to open the Marian Center, a school for the developmentally disabled operated under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Miami. The sisters continue to direct and staff the center, which also offers adult day training and a residence for women with developmental disabilities.

The luncheon was organized by the Marian Center Auxiliary, and event chair Toni Apicella. The auxiliary is a group of volunteers committed to ensuring the future of the Marian Center via fundraising events and member donations.

Signs law that fixes catch-22' for people with disabilities who have jobs, savings

MIAMI GARDENS | Marian Center clients and staff welcomed a very special guest this week: Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

The governor stopped by for about an hour July 13 to ceremonially sign into law the ABLE Act, which stands for Achieving a Better Life Experience for people with disabilities. Joining the governor at the event were representatives of Florida’s Agency for Persons with Disabilities and of community organizations that serve them throughout the state.

Taking its cue from a similarly named federal law passed in 2014, the ABLE Act allows Floridians with disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy to create tax-free savings accounts to cover housing, education, medical, job training and transportation expenses. The money in these accounts will not disqualify them from receiving other government benefits.

“The Church supported this bill,” said Archbishop Thomas Wenski, who attended the ceremony at the Marian Center. He said without the ABLE Act people with disabilities were in a “kind of catch-22” if they obtained a job.

“You don’t want to punish them” for being employed or saving money, the archbishop said.

We arrived at the AAA Arena in Miami a bit early for the show and were treated to an all access preview where we could see some of the animals up close and interact with some performers. Once the show began in earnest it was a non stop plethora of fun. So much going on at once. It was great that all of this head turning is kept in check by ringmaster. How he managed to keep such a high energy level throughout the show is beyond understanding. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.

the Marian Center which is staffed by the Italian Sisters of St. Joseph Benedict Cottolengo, received a $10,000 donation from the National Italian American Foundation during a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. The check was presented by Arthur J. Furia, National Italian American Foundation general counsel and a partner at Shutts & Bowen LLP, and Italy’s Consul General in Miami Marco Rocca. The event took place April 27 at Miami’s Freedom Tower.

A feeling of contentment and peace envelope those who visit the campus of The Marian Center, a truly blessed place that educates and cares for children from 5 – 22 years old, who are challenged by certain developmental disabilities. Located next to St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Sister Lucia has spearheaded the growth of school for the past 47 years with a goal of providing a quality education to students with developmental disabilities, at the highest individual level each is capable of achieving. It was former Bishop of Miami, Coleman F. Carroll, who initially asked The Sisters of St. Joseph Cottolengo to start a school specifically to serve this population. Thus begins the story of The Marian Center School when eleven Sisters traveled to Miami from Italy on October 21, 1963. Sister Lucia was accompanied by Sisters Consolata, Enrichetta, Giuseppina, Carla, Paola, Ada, Enrica, Maria, Giovanna and Giulana. Of the four experienced Sisters still there, three have been here since 1963 (Sister Lucia, Sister Carla, Sister Paola) and Sister Lidia, who came from Italy in 1996. In addition, those sisters are aided by a specialized and caring staff of professional teachers, aids, therapists, and support staff.

The School, ensconced in a pastoral setting with beautifully maintained classrooms and facilities, has grown over the years providing a warm, inviting setting that serves as a second home for the students. It does not take long for a visitor to realize that this committed staff has become extended family for the students as well.

Held at the Surf Club, the Marian Center Auxiliary’s annual luncheon began with a cocktail reception with a boutique to benefit the Center. More than 250 guests were in attendance for lunch, a runway fashion show courtesy of Charli Girls, and some wonderful and heart-warming presentations. One of the highlights of the afternoon was a performance by the Marian Center Bell Choir, a group of teens and adults who attend the Marian Center. And an added bonus was a surprise birthday cake presented to Sister Lucia Ceccotti, Director Emeritus, who will celebrate her 90th birthday. Sister Lucia is one of eleven sisters who came from Italy in 1963 to start the school. The Marian Center provides educational, residential, vocational and recreational services to over 150 students and adults with developmental disabilities.
